My Soapbox....Independent Scrapbook Stores

I very rarely like to climb up on soap boxes regarding topics I find it squelches the creativity in blogs but thought I wanted to speak my mind and maybe even help out a few people in the process. In these times of economic unrest I am sorry to say we are loosing our independent scrapbook stores left and right...yes they are going the way of the dinosaurs....DVDs.....and old fashioned film cameras. Why are they dying off? Simple fact the larger chains are hard to compete with. I have alot of friends in the scrapbook business, alot who own their own shops and a few have closed their doors I am sad to say.
The find it hard to compete with 50% and the on slaught of coupons there larger competitors send out on a weekly bases. And we are going "yes but we save money going to the big stores....50% is 50%" and I agree with you, to a point. Remember this the large companies can offer you this savings because they are buyng in such high volume....mom and pop stores cannot buy like that! what is it that a small independent store gives us that the big chains cant? Plain and simple customer service.....these stores show you how to use the products....offer classes by teachers that the large chains would never have come teach.......offer the smaller scrapbook companies a place to be featured and seen. You will always find unique things at an independent store. So my plee is this....visit your stores take a class or two, being a teacher they are my life line. Purchase items from them and keep them from becoming another memory of what was. Thank you for allowing me to rant on! I would like to do a call out to one of my favorite local stores, I teach here every month and the ladies who own this store are he most wonderful women so if you are ever in the San Antonio Texas area I hope you will stop by and visit with Amy, Carol and Jane at STAMP ANTONIO ARTS. You can visit their beautiful store at
5139 North Loop 1604 W, #108San Antonio TX 78249210-764-7900
http://www.stampantonio.com/Index.html

It is a wonderful store full of unique paper crafting products! What I think I will do each month I will spotlight a great independent store somewhere in the United States or Canada so if you have a favorite you would like me to spotlight email me and tell me about it...who knows you might just see your store in the spotlight.
And for everyone in the San Antonio area or who might be in the area on April 30th I would like to invite you to come take one of my classes. This month I am doing two classes the first is an amazing Tag Book which features Graphics 45 products, Gecko Galz ephemeras, and May Arts Ribbon.

The second class is a tag class where you will create 6 vintage inspired tags using Graphics 45, Gecko Galz and Paper Studio products!
Hope everyone has a fun creative day!

Lets Stamp Outside the Box!

Hi everyone!

I thought it would be fun to show some of my stamped cards and show how to stamp and create cards that are a bit outside the box of flat stamping. My favorite thing to do in card making is to create different textures and layers, and also to paint with different fun mediums!
The First Card is my Madame Butterfly Card and I used a strip of Glossy card stock (I love Stampin Ups glossy card stock it is amazing when painting with Alcohol inks) and the dripping butterfly stamp is Tim Holtz. what I did was using "Butterscotch" and "Ginger" Alcohol inks I painted my glossy card stock then using black "Staz On" ink I stamped the butterflies all over the piece...you will want to use a solvent ink to stamp your butterflies or what ever image you wish to use. I then layered on ephemera's from the Gecko Galz "Asian Flair" collection and topped it off with some great fibers I found in my stash. I also stamped the kanji onto a piece of patterned paper to create my sentiment!

My next card I took a piece of opal shimmer paper and ran it through the cuddle bug machine with an embossing folder  then using "Versa Mark" ink distressed over the embossed surface and sprinkled with gold UTEE and heated it to create the distressed background of my card. Then I used two Gecko Galz Digital stamps from the "Filigree" set and printed the background one of printed brown paper and the queen on tan card stock. I then cut both images out loosely and added Brown ink to the background square and set in the center of the card using pop dots. Then I painted the queen using Smooch inks (this creates a great metallic look) and pop dotted her to the center. Once all the inks are dry I added brown, gold and light green gems by Mark Richards to stamped pieces and tied a piece of rust ribbon at the top!

My Third card I took a piece of Gecko Galz "Butterfly Garden" paper and using Glossy Accents I painted the swirl then added ultra fine white glitter to it, this is a fun way to create your own glitter paper and not have to pay a fortune for it! I used Glossy Accents because it tends to adhere the glitter a tad better than glue pens do! Next I took one of the fairie digital stamp images from Gecko Galz "Fairies" stamp CD and using water color pencils colored her in...when working with water color pencils you will want to start at the edge and work your way to the center of the image growing lighter as you go. I tend to pick three colors a dark tone, a medium tone and a yellow for my light tone. Start with the dark tone then layer in the medium tone and finish with the yellow. when adding the water make sure you have enough water on your brush to blend the colors together and I start from the light color and brush up to the dark color to blend. Once she was dry I cut her out. Then I used May Arts Ribbon and using red line tape adhere a strip across the center of your card, take another piece and tie a bow and with a glue dot adhere to left side of ribbon strip. Then pop dot her to right side of card and I used gold smooch ink and colored in the veins of her wings. then I used a little fairy sentiment on the left side!

This is a brilliant way to create fun beautiful cards. Below please find some goodies so you can make your own fairy card!

Have a happy creative day!

Lets Make A Card!!!!

Little Bird Card

Start with an off white card base and fold in half. Cut piece of "Lucky Stripe" paper by Gecko Galz to 6.5" x 5" and ink edges with black chalk ink and adhere to the top of the card base. Use background stamp and Versa Mark ink and stamp left bottom corner and distress the upper left corner with ink then sprinkle with Gold UTEE and emboss.
Take French Toille paper by Paper Studio and cut to 6.5" x 3" and tear left side of the strip then ink with black chalk ink. Then on the righ side punch with Martha Stewart lattice boarder punch then lay on right side over Lucky stripe paper.
From the Viva La France collage set by Gecko Galz cut out Marie Antoinete and with pop dots place her on the right side of card. Use Glossy Accents or Diamond Glaze adhere small white feather and red glass gem to her hair.
Stamp Bird Cage (I used one of Gecko Galz digital stamps) then ink with brown chalk ink and glue to left side. create holder with red glass gems.
Finish off with pink tulle ribbon.
And there is perfectly Oolala card for you!
Have fun creating!
